Soil blog tetyana

VOCABULARY

Rill: is a narrow incision into soil resulting from erosion.

Gully: is a landform created by running water eroding sharply into soil.

Sediment :is any particulate matter that can be transported be flow of fluid.

Soil erosion :is the wearing away and removal of the land surface.

Ditch :is a small to moderate depression created to channel water.

This week was interesting we were learning about soil.........................we leered about different type of soils how to take care of a soil and what a soil needs to make sure the plant grows and it even supports planets life ......................................... I had a great experience this week learning and working with soil I never knew that soil with be so specific in stuff like different colors mean different stuff and the feel of it ..................the new teachers that were teaching us about soil for this week were great they covered all lessons with a lot of detail, I don’t think it can been taught any better! :)

 QUESTION:
How much bacteria do soil contain and what kinda bacteria that is?

Playing with dirt

Soil erosion diagram
Vocabulary
  1. Rill- A path made by rain when transporting soil.
  2. Sedimentation- rocks and minerals in soil.
  3. Rain intensity- the rate at which rain falls and how much.
  4. Soil texture- The type of soil (sand, clay, silt)
  5. Velocity- The speed and force of an object.
Reflection

The past 2 weeks my class has been learning about soil erosion. We learned the types of soil erosion, how can change the environment and what people are doing to stop soil erosion.
There are many types of soil erosion some of them are showed on the image above. The rills are a path formed by water when it runs over soil making a path. Over time some rills can become gullies which is a bigger verson of a rill.
Soil erosion is not good for the environment. Many people may not think that soil erosion many not be a big deal. Soil erosion realy has a big effect on the fish and other things that live in the water that has been a part of soil erosion. When the soil is in the water it covers the skin of the water and keeps the plants and fish from getting light and that makes less food for the fish that eats them. The more heavy dirt and minerals will go under the water and it will get in the gills of fish making it hard for them to breath. This can effect the food chain in the long run.
So far people have done many things to slow down or stop soil erosion. The best way to stop soil erosion is to plant grass and other plants.
Questions

  1.  What is the main difference between a rill and a gullie?
  2.  What is the best type of soil for plants? (loam, sand, rock, clay)
  3.  How is a rill formed and what does it do?

Soil Erosion by Devonte

we learned all about the diffrent horizons. There are Organic, Topsile, Subsoil, Bedrock.Organic is the top horisons. Then there is topsoil. Then it is subsoil and after is finally bedrock.I also learned about the diffrent soil structure. There are diffrent type of soil structure like single grain, blocky, platy, granular, prismatic, and massive. Single grain is the most rapid and massive is the slowest of all six of them.

Terns

Soil Erosin is when soil is moving.
Detachment is when soil detaches from the rest of the soil.
Rill is where water finds a place to run,its also just a small brook.
Gully is a small valley.
Slope is what water goes down when it breaks a part the soil.

Qustions

What is the diffrence between a Rill and Gully?
Why is soil so important to learn about?
What are the four soil profile horizones?

jessica gabriel: Mucking around in the dirt

Reflection: Throughout the week I learned about soil profiles, structures, textures, pHs, Hydroponic systems, and fertilizers. It was important to learn how to see what soil is good, bad, or what needs improvement.

Vocabulary:There are two parts to SEDIMENTATION, DETACHMENT and TRANSPORT. Transport carries the soil away, while Detachment separates the soil. Sometimes Sedimentation runs into a GULLY or a RILL. A Gully is a samall valley orginially worn away by running water and serves as a drainage. A Rill is a small rivulet or channel.

Question: Is sedimentation based on the particles in the water or the color of the water?

Frank Koss Mucking Around

            Reflection
It was rely cool to learn about soil erosion and how it can affect use.I liked how went out side to to show use first hand how soil erosion can effect our environment. I learned that just by putting hay on erosion spot can make big difference. Erosion can dirty up river and kill the fish that in it.This a big problem btu people don' see it that way.

Vocabulary

Transport -When water carries soil to a different location
Soil Erosion-The washing away of soil by running water
Detachment-When soil is separated by water
Gully- A small valley or ravine originally eroded away by running water

Questions
If erosion is such a important problem why do more people don't pay notice to it ?
Why do most every day work side show some type soil erosion ?
Is there a group of people that go out and find erosion problems ?
